Fair Haven: Home 2/15/17 Thanksgiving has just passed filling fridges with lotś of turkey and other delicious foods. Some of the 5th grade students have been kind enough to share some detail of their Thanksgiving. I hope everyone had a fantastic Thanksgiving like these students down below.
As Thanksgiving approaches, people all over town are Buying, cooking and baking delicious foods for the biggest feast of the year including pie, turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, roasted potatoes, sweet potatoes, brussel sprouts, casseroles, and much much more. But the Thanksgiving food was not always this way.
Many years ago settlers took off to America, the home of the Wampanoag tribe. For thousands of generations the Wampanoag people fished, hunted, and harvest food. The ship carried 101 men, women, and children for 66 days. Many had failed to live during that period, but Winter was still approaching, so they set to hard work gathering supplies to keep them alive. Many grownups were sick, so it was mostly the kids who did this. The Wampanoag people were life savoirs to the settlers. They taught the settlers the best ways to hunt, to grow crops, and where the best drinking places were. On 1621 they agreed to protect each other from other tribes. The bond of friendship that was between the settlers and the Wampanoag people grew. A harvest celebration was to be held. Both the settlers and Wampanoag people harvested, hunted, and fished for days. The held the celebration on November 23. They ate not turky, but deer, corn, shellfish, and roasted meat. Many gave thanks for the rain that came after a two month long drought. But many other thanks were given. By Margaret Glynn Mrs. Daniels’ and Ms. Files’ room is bursting with action. Recently everyone received a job to make our economy grow. The experience is a fun preview of the real world. You can receive fines, reward money, and you can buy rewards with any extra money. But on top of all that, we need to pay desk rent. Sophie Radocchio ( store clerk) is opening her store Friday, November 17th, including the gumball machine and the reward cards.
As Sophie prepares her store for opening day, orchestra has been playing rapidly. Not long ago Orchestra members went on a field trip to RBR. They played with the Red Bank middle school and RBR students. It was an educational experience, and we hope that more students will join orchestra and make the program grow. Lately band has had a fun year. They have been working hard for the approaching winter concert. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays they make their way down to Mrs. Brush’s room and they practice hard. Chorus, recently has been singing their hearts out. Like band, a winter concert is slowly making it’s way down onto the calendar. Miss Brush is one of the talented teachers here at Markham Place. She has kindly agreed to answer a few questions, which you will find right below. Interview with Miss Brush 1. How do you feel about the programs orchestra, band, and chorus? “ Markham Place is very lucky to have a school orchestra, band and chorus that meet during the school day. Some small schools only have a band and a chorus, so we are fortunate that we offer all three!” 2. Do you enjoy these programs? “I love teaching orchestra, band, and chorus. It has always been a dream of mine to teach music!” 3. Which program would you want to gain more members? “I would love to gain more members in the orchestra and chorus so we can produce a bigger sound.” 4. Which program do you enjoy teaching the most? “I enjoy teaching all the programs equally. Each assemble provides a different challenge. It’s a lot of fun printing out music for each group to play.” This year Halloween was great...
We started the day in homeroom, some people wore costumes and others didn’t. One kid wore an Air Dinosaur which was pretty cool. I went as a large yellow banana, some people said they liked it. There was a Cat Lady costume that I thought was the funniest. At lunch, the 5th grade competed in a costume contest. The two best costumes chosen were the Cat Lady and the Air Dinosaur. After school I went trick-or-treating with friends from the block. We ended the Halloween night playing football and eating candy in the neighborhood. That is what I have to say about Halloween 2017. |
